In order to be "ready" for the centenary of the armistice last year I managed to obtain an ensemble from a dressmaker on Ebay which "does the job"; however would now like to work on making thins that bit more authentic. Can I ask please - would you indertake commission work, or do you know anyone who would? Many thanks. We derived measurements from advertisements like these: https://www.flickr.com/photos/36611823@N07/6432872729.
The dress was mainly improvised, though. As you can see it's got a very basic shape, so it isn't hard to improvise based on pictures like those from the IWM collection I linked to in my post.
Good luck!misshendriehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08011079642693175754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5533183452197221378.post-11022114131902184272016-07-28T18:44:57.165+02:002016-07-28T18:44:57.165+02:00Hi I love the fact that you produce such a profess...Hi I love the fact that you produce such a professional authentic-looking garment. I want to make a VAD garment like this but have struggled to find a pattern that I can base it on. I believe that there must have been instructions issued at the time - as they were usually made by local seamstresses or home-made using shop-bought fabric, not issued or bought ready-made. Did you have access to anything like this when you made your costume? I would very much welcome any ideas. Many thanks,
TinaTinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08762831738768864526noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5533183452197221378.post-78653676644221032942016-04-23T21:55:30.982+02:002016-04-23T21:55:30.982+02:00Thanks a lot! :)Thanks a lot! :)misshendriehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08011079642693175754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5533183452197221378.post-84731887363310024532016-04-22T15:43:06.781+02:002016-04-22T15:43:06.781+02:00LOVE THIS !!!LOVE THIS !!!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12890909240844459968noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5533183452197221378.post-28361622754460392812016-01-22T12:13:49.067+01:002016-01-22T12:13:49.067+01:00Hi! You can now see the dress without the apron, and the cap laid flat. We didn't have a pattern for it, but as you can see it's quite easy to improvise.
I do think it matters how the dress looks underneath the apron, as there are situations where the dress can be worn on its own (such as when playing tennis :P. I've seen photos of nurses doing that!).
By the way, VADs stopped wearing the Dora caps after 1915 - from 1916 onwards they wore a piratey veil. So this may have been the case for the St John Ambulance nurses as well!misshendriehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08011079642693175754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5533183452197221378.post-6688654035683786992016-01-22T00:41:21.944+01:002016-01-22T00:41:21.944+01:00Hey! How does the dress look under the apron (or does it matter really)? And did you have a pattern for the cap? That's really a headscratcher for me!
